How do you know YOU are ready for the O levels?

E-mail Print PDF

Very simple, when you score above your target score in past years' Singapore GCE O level Additional/Elementary Mathematics papers.

Unfortunately, the syllabus just changed and I can only do my best to modify the past years' papers to simulate how the examinations are going to be like.

Please be aware you are on a reduced content syllabus much like the level of difficulty of the 2001 to 2007 syllabus. As such, pre 2001 questions are tougher.

Does it mean students in the past are subjected to a tougher paper? No when you understand they had an easier format.

Singapore GCE O level Additional Mathematics Paper 1 prior to 2001 consist of  Section A 10 complusory questions and Section B Choose any 4 of 7 questions.

Singapore GCE O levels Additional Mathematics Paper 2 prior to 2001 consist of 3 Sections (Pure Maths/Statistics/Kinematics) of 8 questions each giving a choice of a total of 24 questions of which you can answer any 6.

Thus it means the questions were tougher but you can pick from topics which you are better at. However schools mostly teach Pure Maths only. So it was effectively 6 out of 8 and not as easy as you imagine.

Unlike other O level subjects, A Maths and to a lesser extent E Maths... are totally predictable as to how you will do.

Topical Preparations

  • Do you understand the concepts in each topic?

  •  Have you memorised the sequences for the stock questions?

  • Can you react when parts of a questions are jumbled up?

  • Has you attained a 90% success rate in answering stock questions (this is different from 1.)

Examinations Techniques and skills

  • Do you have a PRECISE plan to approach the paper?

  • Do you have a clear idea of how you are going to check your solutions quickly?

  • Have you trained yourself to be fast enough to DO/CHECK all questions well within the time limit under EXAMS CONDITIONS?

  • Have you manage to hit x% (where x is your target) consistently 3 times in a row?

Timing wise, preferably you should complete the paper (except for tough questions) in 50% of the time. Learn to check in 25% of the time. And use the remaining 25% wisely.

You can get B3 by simply having a high success rate in stock questions. And an A1/A2 by having a 90% success rate in stock and a reasonable 75/50% success rate in secondary questions. As B3s look bad on me and look ugly for you on your GCE O level cert... Setting a target of B3 is now officially disallowed.

I would guarantee you that the GCE O level A Maths paper will consist in the worst case close to

17 Stock Questions

4 Secondary Questions

2 Killer Questions

In my opinion, it is entirely reasonable to expect a student of average aptitude to get 16 stock questions ( should be all correct but sometimes...) , 2.5 secondary questions ( correct half the time and able to salvage a few marks here and there) and 0.5 killer questions (by salvaging a few marks here and there) correct. 19 out of 23 ought to guarantee an A2.... so that would be our minimum goal. 80%. If an A2 is intolerable... your target should be 85%.
